Halloween Safety

Candy & Treats

  • For young children, remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys.
  • Avoid giving out candy with common allergens like peanuts and tree nuts.
  • Medication can look like candy. Store all medication away and out of reach of children.

Hand Sanitizer

  • If using hand sanitizer, ensure hands are dry after application before consuming food.
  • Do not buy fun packaged hand sanitizer. They can be mistaken for food and accidentally consumed.

Glow Sticks

  • Do not let children chew or break open glow sticks. The liquid in glow sticks or light sticks can irritate the skin if it's splashed or spilled.

Face Paint & Masks

  • Purchase non-toxic face paint or makeup.  Be sure to use cosmetics on the skin, and do not substitute other products, which may contain emollient laxatives, talc or hydrocarbons that can be toxic.
  • Avoid face paint near the eyes.
  • If painting or decorating face masks, use non-toxic art supplies.

Dry Ice

  • Handle dry ice properly. Skin exposure or ingestion of dry ice can cause severe burns.
  • Wear gloves to prevent frostbite when handling dry ice.
  • Don’t place dry ice directly in a drink. It can burn the throat and mouth if consumed.
  • Store it in an insulated container, not the freezer or in an unventilated room.
  • Keep the area ventilated. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide which can replace the oxygen you need to breathe in.

Edible Cannabis

  • Cannabis is frequently sold in the form of edibles like gummies, lollipops, brownies and cookies. If you keep edibles in your home, make sure that they are always clearly labeled (to protect the adults), and that they are never within reach of children.
